September 27, 2008 - Gemcraft
September 27th, 2008I've been unusually diligent with the updates lately, haven't I?
I think I'll post more random quickies to fill in the gaps between my long and blah posts about my daily life (they take so long to write that I rarely look forward to them).
First quickie: Gemcraft = black hole that sucks up my sleeping and eating time. Few flash games are this addictive! I think I've said the same for Desktop Tower Defense; both are defense (and strategy) games created in Flash.

It has so much depth; I think it'd be awesome on a handheld. I finally beat it and got all the glowing frames (but not all the amulets), so I'll finish up on the extras and then wait for the sequel.
September 24, 2008 - One year older...
September 24th, 2008Sigh... my birthday was yesterday, but it wasn't great or anything.
I woke up with pimples. There was one near my eye, which bugged me. Yeah.
I had to wake up early for my club, but they sang "Happy Birthday" even though I was late so I felt guilty, but it was nice! ![]()
I had a test that day and I had to study cram for it all day.
Then, I got my period.
I hate that time of the month 'cause I get all paranoid about what's on my ass (and there's never anything there, not since JHS at least).
And worst of all, I'm OLD. After seeing the older women in my family try to look young and constantly complaining about their wrinkles and white hairs for so long *cough*mom*cough*, their thought process has gotten ingrained in me. I just know I'm catching up to them in years and soon enough, I'll be doing the same.
At least I got a song and a bunch of "Happy Birthdays!"
I shouldn't be so pessimistic about life. *goes back to her happy post*
I wanna be a kid forever! I don't care if that's immature!
September 22, 2008 - 2008 Chuseok Festival in Queens
September 21st, 2008I'm surprised I didn't come home sunburned!
After wandering around looking for food and shade, me and my friends headed towards the stage.
The performances started out with non-JYP stuff, such as (I think) a Tae Kwon Do demonstration.

There was a crappy MC who didn't seem to be famous, but he kept telling people to chant his initials. Of course, it was his job to stall for time, telling us to wait five minutes when it really took nearly an hour. Fortunately, he was later replaced by Ms. Info from Hot 97, who was also the host at one of the fashion shows I helped film at Baruch.
Lots of people were there for the Wonder Girls, but there were other performers too. I might sound a bit harsh, but it wasn't my kind of music, even though I like Asian pop. I'm not 100% sure on the names and stuff since I don't really follow K-Pop that much, so this is kinda like from the POV of an outsider to the K-Pop scene.
(Disclaimer: Crappy pics follow, which I blame on my standing location and 3x optical zoom of my camera; they're kinda blurry 'cause I had to zoom in and crop out some of the heads and shoulders of the people in front of me. Also, the Wonder Girls and JYP pics are screenshots of performance snippets I filmed with my camera. Better pics and video are online somewhere; I just don't feel like looking for them.)

Min: She looked skanky, like she was trying too hard to shake her skinny body. Her music was nothing spectacular, with cliched lyrics. If her genre is dance-pop like it sounds, then you don't need good lyrics, do you? Oh well, whatever works for her.

G-Soul: Nice voice, but there was something bland about him. Even more so 'cause I'm not really into R&B/Soul.

J-Lim: I think of her as a girl version of the above, but with more personality. She and G-Soul did a duet together too.

Wonder Girls: Cue the screaming! As soon as the audience caught a glimpse of them, even the people in seats were standing up, some even standing on seats, to watch them perform (assholes!). Their music was a lot more energetic than the folks before them, so I didn't feel as ho-hum about the Wonder Girls. That and the fans shrieking ensures that you don't zone out, even if you can't see them.
Honestly, they were the only performers in this show that I even heard of (I've only heard their song "So Hot," which IMHO is... nah I'm not gonna even say it). I mean, I didn't even know JYP was a person until a few days ago XD.

Park Jin-Young: Mr. JYP himself finished up the show and he was by far the best. The most obvious thing about is that he's old (I thought he was 40+), but he moves like Michael Jackson.
His female background dancers looked too sexy for the occasion though. They were showing lots of skin, and JYP got frisky with one of them too. That's fine for my peers, but there were kids and elders in the audience too.
There's a chance I liked this performance the most because I finally got to sit after hours of standing with the sun beating down on my right side. After the Wonder Girls were done, a bunch of people left, and I managed to go from a super-invasion of personal space in the back to walking towards the middle, then chair-hopping my way to the front with a buddy. Not front row mind you, it was more like the middle section a dozen rows away from the front section. Each section looked to be separated with a police officer stationed every couple of meters.
Overall, I think this was over-hyped because of the Wonder Girls, but the concert was not bad. Chuseok isn't about K-Pop; it's a harvest festival like Thanksgiving.

Wheee! Okay done. Gotta study~!
September 20, 2008 - Strange Juxtaposition?
September 20th, 2008After all the hype surrounding the Large Hadron Collider a while back and the recent report concerning the fate of the earth, I've been rather heavy-hearted lately. I'm pretty sure I never would've heard about any of this stuff if it weren't for my theatre professor's love of unfortunate news articles from The New York Times. Ah, ignorance truly is bliss.
And, okay, this is really random, even for me, but about half a week ago, I saw a pigeon hanging upside-down from a beam at the subway station. It was struggling to get free, and another pigeon was pecking at its feet to help (which I found amazing). I forgot about the bird for a few more days, and on my way home one day, I glanced over to see if the pigeon got free. It didn't, and I've been passing by that dangling bundle of feathers to and from school. I hope it's gone by Monday.
Ok, emo stuff aside, a few things cheered me up.
First is this video from The Onion, about Disney child stars. I always did find it strange that all the blond guys had the same haircut and there are a bunch of multiracial kids on the Disney Channel:
Second is this sickeningly cute music video from Kimura Kaela. I love her videos. I have 'em on my phone and my PSP in case I ever need a quick pick-me-up. This particular one is tied in with a children's movie, Paco and the Magical Picture Book, which stars the adorable Ayaka Wilson (who's only ~11 but looks a lot older to me); she's in the video along with cameos from the rest of the cast. Anna Tsuchiya's in it too, but what's important is this song makes me happy
.

Kimura Kaela - memories (84.4 MB )
Third, I finally found my Pokémon Diamond game! I cleaned the computer desk to look for it; I managed to fill a shopping bag full of trash, but it's never looked this good. I got some shelves for the desk too!
And fourth, there's gonna be a Metal Gear Solid movie! *head explodes supernovas*
Hehe, this post started out so negative, but I like to end things on a good note.
September 9, 2008 - Back to school
September 9th, 2008I'm in my third week of school already, and it has been average. Not that I was expecting anything spectacular, but... there's like, nothing exciting going on.
The classes are easier, I can say that much. I gotta pay this year, so I chose classes that I hopefully won't get a C or lower in this year:
English: Nothing difficult. Reading, writing, etc. Plus, I've already done two of the texts, Antigone and Beowulf, in HS. We haven't gotten to writing yet, but I can crank out a decent paper like always, so I'm not too worried about that. I've been late often, so I've tried to make up for that by participating.
Intro to Business Law: Asian teacher, all right!! My friends say Law is easy, but I'm hoping it's just common sense with loopholes.
Intro to Theatre: Aside from being a required class, I also wanted to watch all the shows. I went with my friend Sam to Phantom of the Opera (which I'm still giddy over) for her class (same teacher too), but it seems like the teacher is considering Spring Awakening this semester. Should be easy.
Philosophy: This class is the worst one in my schedule. It's boring and fills my head with anger! I hope it'll get better later when we get to the good stuff, but so far, it just makes me feel like philosophers have nothing to do but nitpick at reality. But, the tests are multiple-choice and there are no papers, which is really weird for a thinking kind of class, but I'll take it.
Chorus: How can I fail chorus? I mean, seriously. Well, okay, I was pretty sucky in HS, so I wanted to redeem myself and get a good grade. I intended to lip-sync my way through, but I changed my mind. I'll only do it maybe half the time, 'cause damn, those tunes are hard to remember. The teacher is super-sweet to the point where I keep thinking she flew out of a Disney movie with fairy dust and all, so I feel guilty for not trying harder. Damn human emotions, stopping getting in the way of my grades.
Well, at least I'm halfway through the week. I should try what some of my friends do and pile on classes for only two or three days of the week. Then, my weekend will be longer than my school days, buwhahaha!
