November 29, 2009 - Thanksgiving Round-Up
November 29th, 2009Lets see if I can get into the habit of writing more often again…
On Thanksgiving, I went to Long Island to eat at my relatives' house. Since I didn't get any sleep the previous day, I took a nice long nap there and lazed around in my grandma's room for most of the day.
But the day before Thanksgiving, I had two presentations and zero hours of sleep. I was pretty frantic, as you can probably tell by the random tweets I was sending from the wee hours of the morning until I left for school XD.
I bought myself a brand-new suit for this day. It's my first suit! It has a skirt! After borrowing ill-fitting "business casual attire" from my mom a few years ago, I've always wanted a suit of my own. I was pumped to find a nice fitting one for $80 at Filene's Basement. The cashier gave me a 20% off coupon; she was so sweet!
For the first presentation for COM, each person had to talk for ten minutes. I was the third in my group to go, and the two people before me were pretty articulate. I'm sure I came off as nervous and a bit shaky, and I was even more worried because after each person presented, the professor gave everyone feedback except for me. I didn't think mine was so bad that he couldn't bear to embarrass me in front of the class with criticism, so something had to be up!
I didn't want to be thinking on this for the rest of the Thanksgiving break, so I confronted him about it after class. Good thing I did! He said he was hanging on every word I said and that I basically did everything he told us to do, so he didn't have anything to comment on after I went. I have a hard time believing this, 'cause I tripped on my words a few times, but I'm glad I asked him!
After my second class of the day, I was still feeling pretty confident after the professor's reassurance from the first presentation. That one was ten minutes so the last one, which was only two minutes per person, would be a breeze for sure! But while I was texting my friend, I slipped and fell down the stairs… My back still hurts and I bloodied up my knee and tore my pantyhose. Oh, and people were staring. LOL FAIL.
Fortunately, I brought two extra pairs of pantyhose (and some tights to keep my privates from freezing to death on the way home), since I was sure something would go wrong that day, and sure enough it did. I changed in the bathroom and covered up my knee with a band-aid my friend got for me. All fixed!
After practicing with my group for about an hour, we went to the MKT class. We were the second of three groups to present that day. We did pretty good; I'm surprised at how well the words came out of my mouth without much thinking on my part. We had the cleanest PowerPoint by far; nowhere near as cluttered, wordy, and ugly as the others. Hehe, as a graphic communication major, that's something for me to be proud of.
I'm so glad I got all these presentations out of the way! Plus, for one of the classes, if all the presentations are good, the professor will give us a take-home exam!
November 20, 2009 - More forms to fill, because...
November 20th, 2009"Dear Sarah:
We are happy to inform you that you have been officially admitted to the
Asian Studies Program at Kansai Gaidai University for the spring
semester of 2010."
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!~
XD XD XD XD XD
Let's hope everything after this goes off without a hitch!
September 20, 2009 - Study Abroad
September 20th, 2009School started weeks ago, but I haven't updated much due to my super-rush to complete my study abroad application by the deadline of October 1st.
I've always considered the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Holland, and Australia as places to study abroad in, and somewhat in that order too. UK and AU because they speak English, but AU's hot and has high rates of skin cancer, so I bumped it to the back. NL 'cause of my relatives, FR 'cause it's near my relatives and I learned the language before. And of course, JP because I'm learning it now, and because I was really into all that Japanese stuff when I was younger (still am, to a less childish extent).
But at the end of August, I suddenly realized I'd be running out of time and courses to study abroad. I finally had my heart set on Japan, because I've learned Spanish and French but can barely speak it now (reading it's still good though). I love learning languages, so I'm not gonna let my Japanese slip away. Come on, I had to learn all those characters, a whole new frickin' alphabet for gods sake!
Since Baruch has no exchanges with Japan, I'm applying for Kansai Gaidai University through SUNY Albany. KGU is in Osaka, and about 2.5 hours from Tokyo by train. Of course I'd like to visit Tokyo, but really, I can't even afford to live in Manhattan! I don't wanna trade one concrete jungle for another.
I'm so excited but worried about the competition. The KGU site says it's fierce, but I don't know if they're trying to seem desirable or something. At least, that's what I tell myself to be more confident, lol.
So far, I've got a draft of my statement of purpose done, and varied parts of the application (both online and on paper) completed. I have two teachers giving me a recommendation. Even if I don't make it, I'm still happy at attempting it on my own. Plus, there's always next year!
Wish me luck!
March 2, 2009 - Snow Day, WTF?!
March 2nd, 2009Apparently, there was another snow day about five years ago, but the only one I remember is the Blizzard of '96. Damn, just when I'm out of high school (its been two years, but still). How unfair. Lucky brats!
Attendance for my first class is optional, so I'm gonna wait it out 'til I gotta get to school to return my camcorder to the library.
January 30, 2009 - Spring 2009 semester
January 30th, 2009First week of school is over! Three days of classes a week, whoo hoo!
My classes:
- Video Communication and Production (COM): Practically the same as my Video class in high school. We have to do a PSA and a music video, among other things.
- Statistics for Social Sciences (STA): Numbers and mathy stuff ![]()
- Basic Graphic Communication (ART): LOL, my classes this semester are like a repeat of my Media major in BTHS all over again.
- Japanese II (JPN): My teacher reviewed the previous course (which I took in Spring 2008) in two classes. I barely remember the vocabulary and grammar... ugh, now I gotta cram for the next class.
Now I'm hoping I can find a job. But I have no job experience...
December 25, 2008 - Christmas time is here!
December 25th, 2008I just finished finals two days ago and now I am FREE.
I had two finals on Tuesday. They were Law and Philosophy, back to back; my toughest ones too. I was all panicked about them, but they were better than I expected. The only school related things I have to do are clear out my locker and try to get into the classes I want.
Anyway, for Christmass, I went to church today in Long Island and spent the day at my cousin's house.
I tried to teach my cousin the words to "Santa Baby" and later, I found out that the original singer of that song, Eartha Kitt, passed away today. Sad coincidence. I didn't jinx things somehow did I?
It seems like tomorrow might be another Black Friday of sorts. I'm still trying to figure out if I should go shopping in the city or do it online.
November 25, 2008 - Coffee Shop
November 25th, 2008A movie review appeared this week in The Ticker, Baruch's newspaper, for Coffee Shop. I didn't get to report about the premiere, so I'll do some backtracking now.

The Movie Makers Club spent the summer shooting Coffee Shop, but only a week or so promoting it. The promotion was less than stellar; it was all a last minute rush to sell the tickets. Nonetheless, the premiere was great, and didn't have the panic of the first premiere.
The movie itself looked great for a low-budget movie. Other than the occasional lighting problem and some inconsistent sound, it was enjoyable.
I'll admit I was sorely disappointed (more like fed up actually) that I couldn't do what I wanted to do *cough*edit video*cough*make poster*cough*, but I understand the director wanting quality control over his creation (keep telling yourself you're doing it for experience and think happy thoughts...)
September 24, 2008 - One year older...
September 24th, 2008Sigh... my birthday was yesterday, but it wasn't great or anything.
I woke up with pimples. There was one near my eye, which bugged me. Yeah.
I had to wake up early for my club, but they sang "Happy Birthday" even though I was late so I felt guilty, but it was nice! ![]()
I had a test that day and I had to study cram for it all day.
Then, I got my period.
I hate that time of the month 'cause I get all paranoid about what's on my ass (and there's never anything there, not since JHS at least).
And worst of all, I'm OLD. After seeing the older women in my family try to look young and constantly complaining about their wrinkles and white hairs for so long *cough*mom*cough*, their thought process has gotten ingrained in me. I just know I'm catching up to them in years and soon enough, I'll be doing the same.
At least I got a song and a bunch of "Happy Birthdays!"
I shouldn't be so pessimistic about life. *goes back to her happy post*
I wanna be a kid forever! I don't care if that's immature!
